Podcast to Download, “Channeling Queer Spirits” by Armin Lorenz Gerold

“For the occasion of Halloween I have put together a selection of tunes and sounds to evoke queer spirits and ghosts. C.M. von Hausswolff is a Swedish composer who is inspired by electronic voice phenomena (EVP) recordings. His electronic works are based on the possibility of recording “ghosts and other kinds of life forms living inside a certain space or inside the electricity grids”. (1)
The other day, Lukasz sent me a song by Oni Ayhun. This podcast features two songs released on his first 12-inch record. The music doesn’t necessarily refer to the supernatural, though Oni combines a lot of sound material that he describes as “based on associations, abstractions and confusions”. (2) Pigon’s “Kamm” features a lot of the formal language Oni Ayhun uses on his A-Side. Its widespread metallic texture floats over a techno beat, pushing the border of club music to its maximum. Joe Meeks’, “Magnetic Fields” is borrowed from a concept record entitled “I hear a new world” that plays with aliens and outer space. Joe Meek used to work with radios and early forms of oscillators in the 1950′s.
Arthur Russell’s “See Through”, as with the rest of the podcast, is informed by the idea of channeling spirits through an intimate recording technique, one that echoes or that is recorded through prisms and stones. At the end of the podcast there is a song Daniel sent me once. There is no information other than an African choir and four religious drummers perform it. It is one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard. This podcast should calm the spirits and give us a powerful autumn and winter season.” -Artwork and text by Armin Lorenz Gerold
